How to take care of your Tom Lake art rug.
Regular care will preserve the beauty, texture, and longevity of your rug. New Zealand wool is naturally resilient, but like all fine materials, it performs best when treated with care.
Vacuum your rug frequently to remove fine dust and grit that can wear down wool fibres over time. Use low suction and, where possible, a non-rotating head. Avoid aggressive brush or beater settings, especially on hand-tufted rugs.
Light shedding is normal during the early life of a wool rug and will gradually reduce with regular vacuuming. Do not pull loose fibres. If necessary, trim them carefully with scissors.
Rotate your rug periodically to ensure even wear and balanced exposure to light. We recommend using a quality rug underlay to prevent slipping, reduce friction, and protect both the rug and the floor beneath.
Blot spills as soon as they occur using a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. Work from the outside in and avoid rubbing, which can damage the fibres and spread staining. If needed, use a small amount of wool-safe cleaner or mild, neutral detergent. Avoid over-wetting and allow the rug to dry completely.
For deeper cleaning, use wool-safe products only or engage a professional cleaner experienced in caring for premium wool rugs. Avoid harsh chemicals, alkaline cleaners, or bleach, as these can permanently damage wool fibres.
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, excessive moisture, or heavy dragging of furniture. With consistent care and gentle handling, your New Zealand wool rug will age beautifully and retain its character for years to come.
